Employment
Policies and Procedures are essential in the
present day context of employer-employee relationship
and for the smooth running of the organisation
with regards to its man management. For example
industrial law has dictated that a manager cannot
be suspended from work pending a domestic inquiry
if the contract of employment does not provide
for such suspension.Policies on discipline would
cover such an eventuality to remove any ambiguity.
The policies go beyond recruitment, hiring,
terms and conditions of employment to issues
that affect motivation, productivity, quality
improvements, employee protection and safety.
With the advent of the Industrial Relations
Act, 1967 there is a shift in the balance
of power between the employer and the employee,
which has seen the erosion of the employer's
right to hire and fire. There is a greater
need to put into writing some of the salient
features of the employment relationship to
enable the employees to be more aware of their
duties and obligations and to provide information
with some clarity on the various benefits
and qualification to such benefits. This will
remove ambiguities and uncertainties on the
part of the employee, enable uniform decisions
to be made by the employer and reduce the
incidence of conflict at the workplace.
Business Bytes
has produced a Manual of Employment Policies
and Procedures that covers forty (40) areas
which can be adopted by member companies.
