PENANG --------------------| Places of Interest

Snake Temple Built in 1850 and dedicated to the deity, Chor Soo Kong, the temple is located 3.2km from the Penang International Airport. It is a sanctuary for pit-vipers said to be the ‘servants’ of the deity. These venomous snakes, seen coiled round the pillars, beams and potted plants within the temple are believed to be rendered harmless b the smoke of the burning incense. Admission is free.
Batu Maung Fishing Village
Batu Maung is a small fishing village at the south-eastern tip of the island, which owes its fame to the beach front shrine dedicated to Admiral Cheng Ho, the famous Chinese admiral who featured prominently in the history of the Malacca Sultanate. The huge footprint in the vicinity of the shrine is said to be that of the admiral’s.
Penang Bird Park, Seberang Jaya
The park spans 5 acres and houses a fine collection of some 800 birds from all over the world. It is beautifully landscaped and features a walk-in aviary, a pond with ducks and swans, ornamental ponds abounding with water lilies, Japanese Carps and ornamental plants. Opening hours 9.00am-7.00pm • Admission Fee: RM5.00 adults& RM2.00 children.
Fisheries Department Research Institute Aquarium
This spectacular aquarium and fisheries research centre, located off Jalan Batu Maung provides a good view of the marine life to be found in Malaysian tropical water. Visitors get a walk-through experience in an underwater world separated by glass where they can the marine life and the underwater flora. There are separate displays of special fishes and underwater environments. The facility is designed to be educational and there are interactive exhibition for school children. Admission Fee: RM5.00 for adults& RM2.00 for children.
Pulau Aman
Pulau Aman or ‘island of peace’ is about 2.5 nautical miles from the mainland, just off the southern coast of Seberang Prai. The nearest town is Bukit Tambun from Batu Maung and Batu Uban also take passengers to the island on a 45-minute journey. The 288-acre island is an idyllic fishing village containing some there hundred people who mostly comprise elderly folk and children. Fishing, water sports and jungle trekking are some of the popular activities for holiday makers. There are some well-appointed chalets on the island and homestay facilities with the locals at affordable rates.
Tropical Fruit Farm
Discover an exotic agro-tourism experience at the Tropical fruit Farm in Teluk Bahang. Spread over 25 acres of hilly terrain, the farm contains orchards that produce over 200 tropical and sub-tropical fruit varieties including durians, lychees, mangoes, guavas and several lesser known jungle varieties. The farm arranges several tours daily for visitors who would like to view the orchards and sample the huge variety of locally grown fruits. Open from 10.00am-5.00pm.
Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion
A stately Chinese-type dwelling house representing 18th and 19th century Chinese architecture. The interior features beautiful bedrooms, libraries, ceremonial halls, heavy wooden doors, courtyards and gardens. The mansion houses a rare porcelain collection, sculptures, carvings, tapestries, embroideries and antiques. Permission to enter must be obtained from the owners. Across the road are five blue shophouses which were formerly the servants’ quarters attached to the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion. Tour of the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion are offered at 11.00am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdas.
