This
small state, formerly Malacca, is one of
the more interesting states in Malaysia.
In the 15th century it was the largest port
in South-East Asia, though its importance
has long since declined. Its history is riveting
and the town has fascinating examples of
Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese and Islamic architecture
throughout its rambling streets.. |

The Baba
Nyonya Heritage Museum, at Nos.48 and 50, JalanTun
Tan Cheng Lock, is the ancestral home of three
generations of a Straits-born Chinese Baba
family. The building is now converted into
a stunning museum that preserves the unique
legacy of the Babas.
The Babas combine Chinese and Malay culture,
a result of marriages between early Chinese settlers
and local Malay women.

This
Air Keroh
Recretional park area
about 11 km from Melaka town is partially
landscaped and has paved trails, picnic
areas, a forestry museum and an Orang
Asli village. Here the visitor can enjoy
outdoor activities like trekking, camping
and picnicking. Huts and cabins are available
for rental. There are also tree-top houses,
barbecue facilities and playgrounds.

The traditional
houses at Mini Malaysia exemplify the architectural
styles of each of the thirteen states of Malaysia.
Each of the houses was constructed by a master
builder and is furnished with elements characteristic
of the culture of each state. Attractions include
weekly cultural shows and traditional games.

On
the road to Muar at Kampong Duyong, about
4km from Melaka
town, is a sacred well known as Hang
Tuah's Well.Hang Tuah was a famous
Malay warrior who lived during the reign of
Sultan Mansor Shah.
His courage and exploits were legendary.Hang
Tuah, was buried in a mausoleum in Tanjung
Kling, 15 km from town.

Malacca
crocodile farm is of
the largest crocodile farms in the country.
There
are more than a hundred species found here,
including Albino and humpbacked crocodiles.
The farm is landscaped to recreate the reptiles'
natural environment. Exciting, suspenseful
performances by the keepers and the crocodiles
are held every Saturday. |
Pantai
Kundur, a small fishing village, is
approximately seventeen kilometers from Malacca.
This beach is a favorite spot for swimming and
picnicking, but it is perhaps best known for
its graceful form of night-fishing. Fishermen
suspend their nets from poles near their kelongs
(houses built on stilts over the water) and periodically
lower them to net a passing shoal.

Pulau
Besar is located three nautical
miles off the coast. Those in search of fresh
air and tranquility will be entranced by the
natural beauty of the island. Pulau Besar also
abounds with intriguing folklore and sacred graves
and shrines. The island has an international
class hotel and several chalets. Snorkeling,
swimming, fishing, and jungle trekking are popular
activities. |
Butterfly
Farm
One of the world's most comprehensive butterfly and insect farms, with well
over two hundred local species, including the rare Raja Brooke and Birdwing
butterflies. The farm also possesses an extensive collection of insect specimens.
A'Famosa
There are steps from St. Paul's Church down the hill to A' Famosa , all that
remains of the Portuguese fortress of A' Famosa, constructed by Alfonso
d'Albuquerque in 1511.
Malacca
Zoo
The open-habitat zoo sprawls over 22 hectares and has been rated as one of
the best in Malaysia. It is home to the rare and endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros
as well as many other animals indigenous to Southeast Asia.
Reptile
Park
Opposite the zoo is the Reptile Park, which houses most of the dozens of species
of snakes to be found in Malaysia.
Tanjung
Bidara
Tanjung Bidara beach is about 20 km north west of Melaka. It offers a quiet,
restful beach area tucked away from the main road with food stalls and bathing
facilities.
Tanjung
Kling
Tanjung Kling is a coastal town about
10 km northwest of Melaka with numerous
condominiums and hotels situated all along
the coastal road. It is a regular weekend
retreat for eating out and relaxation.
Museum
The History Museum holds some detailed information of Melaka's history through
maps, lithographs, oil paintings and photographs. Authentic historical
artifacts left behind by the Portuguese and Dutch and those of the early
Chinese and Malays who lived in Melaka hundreds of years ago can be seen
here. |
