Pahang
is the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia
and is situated in the eastern coastal
region. The state's 35,964 sq. km encompasses
a remarkable range of Malaysia's many
different environments, from the majestic
peaks and cool hill regions of the state's
western region to the miles of soft sand
beach along the South China Sea. Pahang's
nearly one million people constitute a
representative mix of Malaysia's three
main ethnic communities - Malay, Chinese
and Indian. |

 |
While
the capital of Pahang is of less historical
interest
than many of Malaysia's state capitals, Kuantan is
the entry point for many of Pahang's peerless
beach resorts. Located near the midway point
of the east coast, Kuantan is a bustling town
and a major stopover for travelers heading
north, south or across the peninsula.
|
Outside of
Kuantan in the town of Panching, 25km north-west,
is the Gua Charah (Charah Cave), which contains
a statue of the Sleeping Buddha carved out
of the rocks. When the sun is at a certain
angle in July, light penetrates the cave and
the reclining Buddha's head is lit up. It is
a steep climb up an external stairway to the
cave entrance. |

Genting
Highlands is the most
developed hill resort in Malaysia. At
2,000 meters above sea level, it offers
a cool respite from Malaysia's capital
city combined with all of the excitement,
luxury, and entertainment of an international
resort destination. In fact, many Malaysian
people head for Genting Highlands specifically
for its nightlife. There are international
dinner shows and discos, while the world-class
Casino de Genting offers Blackjack, Baccarat,
Keno, French Bull, Roulette, Tai Sai and
slot machines.
|
Cameron
Highlands is the largest and most genteel of the hill
resorts in Malaysia, located in Pahang's northwestern
corner, at an altitude of 1,829meters. The
temperate climate of the Cameron Highlands
has made it Malaysia's 'Green Bowl,' supplying
cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, green peppers
and lettuce to major cities in Malaysia as
well as to Singapore. Tea and strawberries
are also grown on the terraced slopes of the
Cameron Highlands, and the area possesses notable
rose gardens as well.

Fraser's
Hill nestles quietly at 1,524 meters above
sea level,
slightly to the north of the Genting Highlands
and also in Pahang. The beauty of Fraser's
Hill is based primarily on its cool mountain
air, its abundance of luxuriant vegetation,
and its peace and tranquility.There
are jungle trails, waterfalls, and flower nurseries,
a very pleasant 9-hole golf course, and a riding
stable. Other facilities include a children's
playground and a roller skating rink. |
Bukit Larut,
located just ten kilometers from quiet
Taiping in Perak, is Malaysia's oldest
hill station. Bukit Larut is not nearly
as developed as more celebrated hill resorts
such as the Cameron or Genting Highlands.
However, it preserves much more of the
atmosphere of a colonial hill station,
with modest, welcoming bungalows, carefully
cultivated gardens, and a pervasive atmosphere
of cool quietude.

This
famous island paradise is Tioman
Island which
is the largest on the east coast and yet
sparsely populated. The island used to be
a popular
spot with sailing ships which stopped over
for fresh
water and supplies. Tioman's beauty lies in
its waterfalls, large tract of jungle and
lovely
beaches with clear waters teeming with fish
and coral formations.

Negara (National Park) straddles
the borders of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang
in Peninsular Malaysia. A totally protected area
of 4,343 sq km, Taman Negara is one of the world's
oldest tropical rain forests. The diversity of
its fauna and flora is a result of undisturbed
evolution over 130 million years

The
Endau-Rompin
area covers the boundary between Johor
and Pahang. Sprawling over an estimated
area of almost nine hundred square kilometers,
it is one of the few remaining lowland
forests in Peninsular Malaysia. It encompasses
the watershed of the rivers Endau and
Rompin, from which it derives its name.

Tasik
Chini
A hundred kilometers south of Kuantan is Tasik Chini. The thirteen fresh-water

requisite stories of monsters in the lakes to legends of an ancient Khmer
city on the site.
