Terengganu is the land of the lilting Gamelan and the
mesmerising "Ulek Mayang" dance--living
testimony to the state's centuries-old guardianship
of Malaysia's cultural heritage. It is a quiet
state, with many small villages, quiet roads,
and secluded islands and beaches. The clear
waters and teeming marine life of Terengganu
have made
it an increasingly popular destination for
divers.

Another enchanting island off the
coast of Terengganu is Pulau Redang. It is relatively
uninhabited except for a fishing village built
on stilts over the sea. Its surrounding waters

corals of every hue, anemones, and colorful clams.
The crystal clear waters make this an ideal spot
for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. |

Pulau Duyung
The largest island
in the estuary of the Terengganu river, Pulau
Duyung is famous for its traditional
boat makers. These are skillful craftsmen,
able to build vessels the traditional
way without
using any plans or sketches-but also adaptable
to the times, and can build one with technical
drawings applying modern techniques and materials.
Terengganu's history of boat-making goes
back to the days when its vessels plied
the trade
route to Siam and Indochina.

Turtle-Watching at Rantau Abang
The warm grainy sands of Rantau Abang are
thought to be the ideal nesting grounds
for the giant Dermocheleys coriaca (leatherback
turtles). Rantau Abang is one of the
few leatherback nesting sites in the
world. Turtle sanctuaries have been established
in an effort to reverse the decline of
leatherback turtles.
